Why?

So often we are asked why we do what we do? Honestly, at times that question kind of irritates me. Why the risk? Why all the extra work? Is it really worth it?

Short answer: It is absolutely worth it.

As you may see from our photos, our kids are directly involved in our operation. They're not just watching; they're doing it with us. The excitement they experience harvesting their garden, collecting eggs, and helping with chores is unmatched. They are proud to show others their projects. Then there is that sense of satisfaction when you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor, and there is no better

feeling than experiencing that alongside them. I would be lying if I said everyday was rainbows and butterflies here, especially with toddlers. There are days they are disinterested. That is normal.

They're learning even on the days we don't want to do it, we still have to do it. That's called responsibility.

And while most of what we do around here is raising food, that's really not entirely the purpose of what we are doing here. The truth is you don't even need a large garden or animals to do what we are trying to do here. It could be any type of project on any scale. The real purpose here is to raise kids that will grow up to be responsible, open minded and knowledgeable adults. To raise humans that are creative and can think outside the box. Humans that know where their food comes from, are comfortable using tools and operating equipment safely, and have the skill set to build their own projects and do things themselves.

Most importantly, my goal is for these tiny humans to grow up and be respectful of all people and animals and understand the value of their skills and knowledge. I want them to realize the importance of sharing their skills and knowledge with others and to be the people others call for help. To become adults that show up ready to accomplish any task and get the job done.

Children learn all this by watching. They are always watching.

We set the example for them, and they are the reason why.
